Letter from the alumni president

Dear alumni,

It is a genuine pleasure to provide you with an update as we embark on an exciting year.

This year we have changed our mission to reach out to all degree holders at graduation — not just MDs. It is with much enthusiasm that we welcome graduates from master’s and PhD programs at the medical center. As before, the alumni association will sponsor events for MD alumni, such as reunion weekend, and support a variety of student and School of Medicine programs. And we look forward to expanding our activities to include alumni of all other degree programs.

As an example, this fall we held a symposium for our PhD alumni. The Sept. 30 symposium, “Stanford Synapses — A Meeting of the Minds,” brought together leaders in neuroscience to speak before an audience of School of Medicine alumni. There’s more information about the event on our Web site: http://med.stanford.edu/alumni.

Other objectives for the year are to strengthen our ongoing effort to provide an environment that welcomes and supports diversity, and to provide additional support for medical students for productive research through the Medical Scholars Program, a financial aid program that gives MD-seeking students the opportunity to undertake research projects with guidance from faculty advisors. We also anticipate working with the School of Medicine as it plans the new education building, which will provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for our students.

I hope to see you at many of the events planned for this coming academic year. I welcome input and suggestions and encourage you to contact me via e-mail ( ). We look forward to your participation.

Cordially,

Susan Knox , MD, '85
President, Stanford University Medical Center Alumni Association
