Letter from the alumni president

Dear Alumni,

I hope that 2006 has been a good year so far for all of you.

The most recent news here is the Medical Center Alumni Weekend, which was April 28-30. It was a wonderful weekend of events that enabled former classmates to reconnect and see how Stanford is addressing the challenges of medicine. Highlights included a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Lane Medical Library; tours of the medical center, Cantor Arts Center and Jasper Ridge; presentation of the J.E. Wallace Sterling “Muleshoe” Lifetime Alumni Achievement Award to Frances Conley, MD, and Augustus White, MD, PhD (read the article); a symposium on the role of Stanford alumni and faculty in international health; and the dean’s cocktail reception and class reunion dinners. This year marked the first reunion hosted by the newly expanded Stanford University Medical Center Alumni Association.

Looking ahead, we’re planning events of interest to both our PhD and MD alumni. Among our areas of focus: facilitating alumni interaction with one another and the School of Medicine, and support for school programs.

The School of Medicine is embarking on a very exciting new building project — the Learning and Knowledge Center — which will include state-of-the-art teaching facilities and a conference center. It is intended to be at the crossroads of the hospital and research buildings, bringing students (both medical and graduate) into close proximity with both arenas of expertise and innovation, and facilitating translational medicine. The building will also pay tribute to the history of the School of Medicine and acknowledge the contributions of its alumni. It will be a welcoming environment for visiting alumni and a center for related learning opportunities. We will keep you posted on the progress of this exciting project as it moves forward this coming year.

On behalf of the alumni association, I extend our wish that you all have a wonderful summer. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing many of you in the coming academic year.

Cordially,

Susan Knox , MD ’85
President, Stanford University Medical Center Alumni Association
