Letter from the alumni president

Dear Colleagues,

Spring! Campus trees, flowers and architectural beauty add exclamation points to the School of Medicine’s pivotal work.

The Stanford medical alumni reunion, May 7-8, will be a perfect time to explore our alma mater’s exhilarating world of science and health. With Dean Pizzo’s enthusiastic participation, Stanford will provide an array of groundbreaking experiences. On that Friday, be the first on your block (really!) to tour the new Stanford Cancer Center and the Clark Center — a spectacular new building that serves as home for the interdisciplinary research initiative known as Bio-X. On Saturday, lay on hands to learn anatomy the new way and use the dazzling array of information technology tools to troll for knowledge in pediatrics, pathology and education.

The Spring Symposium, May 8, will demonstrate Stanford’s ability to turn vision into reality. Stanford must continue to press on in order to soar. As the faculty discussed at the January 2004 Strategic Planning Retreat, threats loom from several sectors: a theocratic approach to funding science, increased competition in the clinical realm, high costs, low reimbursements, fast-paced changes in technology, a certain isolation from the community and patient satisfaction scores that need improving. Stanford medical school brings powerful assets to the fray: the university itself; a history of effective collaborations; unsurpassed creativity, skills and energy; devotion and strong leadership.

Stanford wants to reach out — and alumni want to reach back. We can be advocates, mentors, donors, cheerleaders, innovators. Come to the campus May 7-8 to listen, learn and do. You will leave with brain and body refreshed.

Cordially,

Linda Hawes Clever, MD ’65
President, Stanford Medical Alumni Association
