letter from SMAA president

Dear Fellow Alums,

IT IS A DISTINCT PLEASURE TO SERVE AS YOUR PRESIDENT FOR THIS ACADEMIC YEAR. The association is in excellent and productive hands and the programs we sponsor, outlined in previous issues of Stanford Medicine, are valuable to the school and its students. It has been a delight for me to work with Ross Bright, '58, associate dean for alumni affairs; Kaleo Waxman, alumni coordinator; and her dedicated staff. We are fortunate to have such excellent leadership, along with a loyal, hard-working board of governors, representing all decades of our membership.

As you are aware, we no longer ask for dues to the association. We are now a part of the medical school and, as such, we receive our operating funds from the dean's office. I sincerely hope that you will continue to show your support of the school by your contributions to the Medical Fund.

As many of you know, the new Stanford University president, John Hennessy, has named Philip Pizzo dean of Stanford University School of Medicine, to succeed Dean Bauer. Dr. Pizzo is physician-in-chief of the Childrens' Hospital in Boston and chair of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He will arrive in April. Dr. Pizzo is a distinguished clinician and a skilled leader who comes to Stanford at a crucial time in the school's history, with major curriculum and facility decisions to be made and implemented. I am sure he will appreciate our support and our input in this demanding process.

Dr. Gene Bauer, as vice president of the medical center, will work closely with Dr. Pizzo.

We hope to see many of you at our three-day spring reunion and annual alumni association symposium and meeting, May 3-5. One highlight for me will be the symposium, this year devoted to "What's New" in research and clinical medicine. For more information on the reunion, call the alumni affairs office, (650) 736-2766.

Come and visit your school when you can. I believe you will find it an inspiring experience. Stanford School of Medicine remains an institution which we, as graduates, can point to with pride as our alma mater.

Robert M. Cody, MD

PRESIDENT, STANFORD MEDICAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
